Before flowing into the sea, the river must plunge down from the mountain.
Before being reborn in a majestic mantle, the phoenix must burn in flames.
Before realising your greatest dreams, you must drown in your deepest self.

The river of the self is an exquisite metaphor for the inner journey that the artist has been on since 2020. A true spiritual retreat, which concluded this autumn, resulting in a series of works of art with incredible emotional power.
In order to fully understand the immense significance of this latest collection in the artist's career, it is necessary to refer to the archetype of the river and Freudian theories of the self, as they provide the perfect lens through which to analyse what represents a journey of rebirth that is as luminous as it is troubled and tortuous.
Like a river flowing down from the mountains, subject to continuous and ever-changing motion, the artist, who has retired to the Tuscan mountains, begins a new creative era, characterised by ambivalent feelings and constant challenges, with the aim of achieving a renewed awareness of his identity as an artist.
The interpretations of nature found in his previous works, which had already led the artist to exhibit in all the major European capitals, New York, Los Angeles and Beirut in 2019, and to establish himself among the most successful contemporary artists, are no longer sufficient to satisfy Simafra's impetuous soul.
Thus, in an old barn full of white canvases, a journey of revolution against himself begins. A battle between ego and super-ego, which will put the artist to the test in his search for his own expressive freedom.

In Simafra's work, the ego emerges as a reflection of challenges and constant inner conflicts, which the artist captures with dense, vibrant brushstrokes that assault the canvas. This tension fully represents the split between the individual desire for expression and the need to adapt to external expectations. On the other hand, the super-ego manifests itself as a force that drives the artist to explore the deepest recesses of his soul, to confront his demons in search of redemption through art.

‘I felt death hovering over me. And so I had to die in order to be reborn.’
