On 25 November 2023 at 6 p.m., the solo exhibition by artist Coquelicot Mafille, Camminare sul filo (Walking on a Tightrope), will open at the Museum of Female Entrepreneurship in Muravera. The exhibition will be curated by Nuar Gallery.
Coquelicot Mafille's works are intertwined with the extraordinary story of Francesca Sanna Sulis. A woman from Sardinia, this entrepreneur ahead of her time found her emancipation by following a silk thread. In the mid-18th century, Francesca Sulis (1716-1810), the daughter of wealthy landowners, managed to transform her estates in Sarrabus, a remote agricultural area on the outskirts of the Kingdom of Sardinia and in the Campidano di Cagliari, into a fashion empire.
The Donna Sanna Francesca Sulis Museum of Female Entrepreneurship becomes the ideal setting for Coquelicot Mafille's works, a place where the life of a silk thread is recounted. Guided by the enlightened young mind of Donna Francesca, this thread became a thriving industry, a school for all those who worked in it, and an example of female emancipation.
The exhibition presents a series of visual poems and evocative narratives, created specifically for this occasion, while others have found their rightful place in this space through paintings and embroidered works on canvas, fabric and walls. Walking on the wire evokes the artist's distinctive trait, which, through embroidery, weaves stories and narratives that in this exhibition pay homage to one of the greatest women Sardinia has ever produced, a pioneer of innovation who, with her silks and looms, not only transformed her land into one of the greatest centres of trade in the 18th century, but also created opportunities for all social classes.
'Dare where no one has dared before. Proceed towards your goal when the road is strewn with obstacles. Choose other methods, other habits, other scales and other dimensions.
Walk the tightrope like the poets who trace high and deep luminous paths in the soul, like the artists who translate and transform the world, like the entrepreneurs who invest in innovation and sustainable practices, like the women who every day invent new spaces for themselves and others despite social gender injustices, all contemporary tightrope walkers who take the risk of the void and the wind."
