Bio

Niccolò Tolaini was born in Rome in 1998, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the city, while simultaneously developing his artistic practice within a unique and deeply formative context: for the past four years, he has been collaborating with a gallery dedicated to neurodivergent artists a space that has marked a pivotal turning point in his creative development.

His early research was rooted in the traditions of Art Brut and Neo-Expressionism, with occasional forays into abstraction. Over time, his focus shifted toward European Expressionism and Impressionism movements that today form the core of his pictorial inspiration, fostering a practice grounded in the interplay between emotional gesture and perceptual sensitivity, between interior landscapes and the external world.

Tolaini’s painting is distinguished by his intense and deliberate use of color, applied in rapid, dense strokes that charge the surface with immediacy and vibrancy. His compositions, far from accidental, reveal an innate sense of balance and structural clarity, where full and empty spaces, material density and visual breath alternate with near-musical precision. His works often unfold through a rich layering of pigments: colors overlap, peek through, contradict and converse, generating visual depth and tension.

This approach to painting creates a compelling visual experience in which the immediacy of gesture meets a refined formal construction, capable of evoking moods, interior visions, and fragments of a suspended reality.

Working daily alongside artists whose expressive freedom is radical and unconstrained has profoundly shaped his visual language. Immersed in an environment where creation emerges from instinct and genuine interpersonal exchange, Tolaini has also taken part in collective works, born from a spirit of experimentation and shared exploration.
