Bio
Mattia Sugamiele was born in 1984 in Erice (TP). He currently lives and works in Milan.
After graduating in production and audio-video at the IED in Milan, he developed a particular interest in artistic practices and decided to enroll at the Brera Academy in Milan, where he obtained a degree in Visual Arts with a focus on painting in 2016. During his academic journey, he participated in various group exhibitions, including the First Art Biennale of Trapani curated by Antonio Sammartano (2013), Grafica in Opera at Villa Gori (Lucca, 2013), the collective exhibition New Looks at the Magi Museum (Pieve di Cento, BO, 2014), Possible Loves at the Ex Studio by Piero Manzoni (Milan, 2014), and Future Painting at Spazio Rivoli 2 by Roberto Casiraghi (Milan, 2016). Alongside his painting practice, Sugamiele integrates the musical dimension, realizing a project of sound painting MM/SS performed at the Meet Factory (2014), at the European Photography Festival (Reggio Emilia, 2014), and at Café Central (Brussels, 2015).
Starting from 2017, the artist dedicated himself entirely to the development of his research with a residency period at Viafarini (Milan 2020-2021) with exhibitions at Photo Israel (Tel Aviv, 2017), Palazzo Oneto at Manifesta 12 (Palermo, 2018), participating in the Festival Studies Initiatives (Milan, 2018 and 2019) and the first edition of Rea Fair (Milan, 2020).
Sugamiele's work focuses on matter, digital textures, cellophane reflections, and plastic. Intrigued and attracted, as if by a screen, we approach familiar forms with surprising consistencies. An abstraction of shapes and colors where an aesthetic re-elaboration of the present finds its space, and where today's digital and interconnected world is manifested in indirect but very clear forms.
"I am interested in the transformation of the image, which changes, until it disappears, often deprived of the system of signs that it was able to evoke, creating a void in which technology finds its space. My research explores the interaction between humans, along with their memories, actions, desires, hopes, and the evolution of the technological sphere that shapes our contemporary world."
And it is in this contemporary panorama, made famous by Jeff Koons' Balloon Dogs, that Mattia Sugamiele's art fits in, but he rejects the industrial repeatability of Koonsian design and rediscovers, while using similar textures and colors, the beauty of manual work.
