Bio
MARICA BORBÁS-TÓTH is based in Budapest and her practice explores the tension between urban living and the human need for visual and emotional refuge. Her work investigates how painting can soften the sense of overload generated by contemporary environments, offering instead spaces of quiet observation and sensory recalibration.
Drawing from photographs of natural elements – often plants from her immediate surroundings – she develops compositions that focus on the subtle interplay of organic forms. Leaves folding over one another, partially concealing and revealing their contours, become a recurring visual motif. These layered structures translate onto the canvas as overlapping “organic windows,” creating depth and rhythm within the pictorial space.
Her paintings exist on the threshold between abstraction and representation, where recognisable forms dissolve into more fluid, atmospheric configurations. Through this balance, she constructs surfaces that invite a slower, more attentive mode of looking.
Working primarily with acrylic, oil paint and charcoal, the artist builds textured compositions that reflect an ongoing dialogue between the natural and the constructed, the intimate and the external.
