Bio
Jacopo Mandich born in Rome in 1979, graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2005. The following year, he won the Edgardo Mannucci Prize and became the first Italian artist invited to the Contemporary Biennale of Ekaterinburg in Russia.
Mandich's artistic research stems from an alchemical conception of matter where the aesthetic study of the artwork is inseparable from the energetic use he makes of materials. His primary resources are recycled wood and iron, which he molds with the technical skill worthy of a great master. He also experiments with stone, paraffin, concrete, and all plastic materials that can vibrate better under his hands. At the installation level, light and sound come into play, as well as ephemeral materials like ice, destined to disappear under the astonished gaze of the observer. Each of these materials with which Mandich plays, when brought into contact with each other, creates a vigorous short circuit capable of generating powerful and vibrant sculptural structures.
Thus, we find ourselves faced with a ceiling that crashes down on us, held only by tightly stretched elastic bands brought to the limit of their breaking point, or we are suddenly surrounded by ethereal clouds of iron that shine in the passage of light, projecting us into distant worlds and revealing realities hidden from us. They are all metaphors for our existence, dreamlike manifestations where the artist analyzes the thin line that separates conscious reality from dissociated unconsciousness. Mandich manages to dismantle the conception of a single reality in favor of a pluralistic vision, inviting the observer to enjoy the paradoxes hidden behind every layer of reality.
"The alchemical and energetic interaction that runs through matter is the fulcrum of my artistic research. Matter, archaic and brutal or delicate and sublimated, is a mirror and metaphor for the multiple stratifications of the human being, generating a specific poetic that feeds on the depths of human experience."
Mandich has enriched museums and cultural sites with multiple permanent installations. This includes CRACK and Skin of Celestial Body in Satka, Russia, Invisible Forces at 0.8 Void Castelsardo, and HUG at the Museum of Art of the Bosco della Sila in Catanzaro, where he also participates in an artist residency.
