Bio

Giovanni Lo Verso (Palermo, 1972) is an Italian sculptor, set designer and ceramist. His work lies at the intersection of the applied arts and design. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, where he still lives. He has developed a practice focused particularly on environmental installations, using sculpture and ceramics as a means of anthropological and territorial exploration. He has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and internationally, as well as artist residencies and public projects. Among the artist's major exhibition experiences are the solo exhibition “Scultorea,” held at Elenk'Art in Palermo, and her participation in the group exhibition “Di Amori, di Vasi, di Basilico,” held at the Foro G Gallery in Messina. The Art Generation group exhibition in 2024 in Savonlinna, Finland.

A major milestone in her artistic career was winning first place in the artist residency program “Contemporary Art Meets Sicilian Identity” at the Tenuta Rasocolmo in Messina.

Drawing on his solid experience in the fields of cinema, particularly in installation and set design, Lo Verso conceives his work in close relation to the hosting space. His sculpture is never an isolated object, but a scenographic element capable of reconfiguring the environment and creating a strong relational tension with the viewer, whilst also engaging with design.

He is the founder and president of the cultural association ‘arèa’ in Palermo, which focuses on training programmes, residencies and visual production, fostering contemporary debate.The works seem to be part of a tension already present in the material, which precedes and guides the artist’s gesture. This process reflects a desire to make perceptible the link between the work and the artist’s identity; regardless of scale, dimensions or the material used, the artist is able to develop a recognisable iconographic system within which his stylistic signature and the maturation of his artistic research are manifested.

On the one hand, Lo Verso works on the figure of ‘Mollia’, developing its identity through various dimensions and colour choices. At the same time, he reinterprets the Sicilian Pupi and Dame in a contemporary key.His sculptures become an organism through which the eye can wander, where smooth surfaces or rough patches create a tactile experience. The works establish a relationship with the space that houses them, engaging in a dialogue with the architecture and domestic environments, and reviving the tradition of collecting as a practice of daily engagement with works of art.
