Bio
Ellard Vasen, born in 1982, currently resides and works in Amsterdam. With a background in film, Ellard loves to move seamlessly between meticulously planned shots and completely spontaneous ones. He enjoys sketching his photos in advance, thinking about what would suit the person he expects to find in front of the camera. During the shoot, these sketches become a starting point: in some cases, the photo faithfully reflects the sketch, while in others Ellard discards the sketches and improvises. In the best cases, the subject adds something extra, creating a unique alchemy.
His ability to work with both natural and artificial light allows him to experiment freely, as demonstrated by his recent work in underwater photography. He exhibited his work at ImageNation in Paris in 2023, where he met some members of the collective he is part of. Together with them, he spent time in Sardinia during an artist residency last year. The beautiful moments experienced during that stay were masterfully captured in his latest series of photographs. In these images, imbued with meaning and memories, the intensity of human connections and the depth of shared emotions clearly emerge.
