Bio
Bernado Peruta was born in Bergamo in 1973, attended the Castellini School of Plastic Arts in Como, and among his very first jobs he began working on the restoration of paintings in churches around his area. In 1997 he attended the studio of a renowned portrait painter from Bergamo, where he deepened the technique of oil painting and perfected an impeccable stylistic skill, which we can find in his works today. In 2004 he moved to Nice, opened his atelier and showed his works for the first time. From there on, his career will be in full ascent, in 2007 he returned to Italy and was invited to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions in Belgium, France, Germany and the States.
According to Peruta, art is the representation of space that cannot be confined, as it is moved by perpetual change. He therefore chooses to represent it through an innovative painting technique that can sustain the motion that the artist seeks in his works. Micro-perforated panels on which he paints with color overlays, creating a unique and immediately recognizable stylistic trait. This particular technique allows Peruta to space the detections of light and shadow, which are brought onto several planes, creating an unusual optical effect and determining an indefinite, shifting space, a space of relative truths and the only place where reality can be, perhaps, understood.
In his works there is a soffused atmosphere involving the whole scene, the images are never static, there is depth, allusions, space is pregnant and incisive, suspended in intense and dreamlike moments, readable in and through the faces of his figures. Shifting figures, which in a Pirandellian vision, change depending on the point of view, and despite the various possibilities of perspective, figures that we will never fully understand. The intimate reading of the work comes out, thus, through various elements that constitute the figures, such as the glazing or decompositions of certain details, the reverberations that interrupt the detail, which aim to grasp the essence beyond the depiction. Reality is never delineated in a simple frame, it changes as we move around the room and as we ascribe further meanings to the work before our eyes.
All this is made possible by the artist's classical training, and the consequent mastery of the medium that he demonstrates in each of his creations. The use of the metal surface is not only the means by which he achieves the iridescent effects, but a real aesthetic choice in itself, an unmistakable characteristic unique to the artist that transcends the beauty of the portrait onto the cold surface of a metal plane, creating a strong visual and conceptual contrast.
