Bio
Ak2deru, the artistic name of Francesco Careddu, was born in Tempio Pausania Sardinia in 1975. He attended the Artistic High School in his hometown and, from 1998 to 2008, studied musical composition with Gian Paolo Chiti and Alvin Curran, being the latter's assistant composer until 2015. He is the founder of the cultural association "Dal Suono Sommerso," active in the contemporary music scene from 2007 to 2012. For over twenty years, he has resided and worked in Rome, where he has accumulated a vast portfolio of exhibitions and installations - among the most recent being "Dimora," a multimedia environmental installation created in 2023 at PrimaLinea Studio and Villa Carpegna. Since 2012, he has regularly exhibited both in Italy and abroad, with recent participations in exhibitions in Taiwan and New York. "Painting, performance, composition: my ritual practices. Iteration and variation are fundamental pillars of my work. In a process of continuous creation and destruction and oscillation between opposites, I investigate the relationship between the one and the multiplicity. The search for variety within unity concerns all aspects of my work: from the morphology of the works to their dimensions, from the techniques to the materials and supports used, they always encapsulate a symbolism that reveals the ancestral complexity of our civilization." His is a creative process from a musician applied to figurative art. The sense of ritual is all folded into the encounter between the human being and their ancient residue, the discard of what the process of civilization has produced and has escaped any form of transcription, the non-symbolized. The connections between music and painting are intrinsic in all the artist's works, including the installative and performative declinations. In the realization of a work, a long meditation directs the creative composition, and even improvisation is welcomed as a true act of presence. He defines his work as "monosemic painting" (from the Greek mónos "alone, one" and sèma "sign") in reference to the "unique sign" on which it is based: the segment of a portion of infinity, an archetype, which reverberates on itself and saturates the entire surface. From this terminology comes "Monosema," the title of all his visual works conceived as a single corpus. Thus, each subject is declined in the code coined by the artist, shaped and investigated to its root to test and express its declinations and multiple meanings. The theoretical background of Ak2deru's work, the ancestral connection between the part and the whole, thus emerges on the canvas with a sweet balance between calculated elegance and visceral impulse, opposites dancing within the creative process, the human soul, and the entire universe. Ak2deru argues that iconoclasm pursues him because the image, perpetually denied, always seems to resurrect, more powerful than before. This "iconoclastic" attitude pervades many aspects of his work, starting from the materials used: ash, tar, earth, resin, and metallic powder composing pictorial extroflections, a statement of intent that destroys the aesthetic dimension permeating our society, offering a visually evolving reinterpretation. Even the choice of the pseudonym he uses can be considered derived from him. Ak2deru, an alphanumeric transposition of his surname, is a pragmatic declaration of self-improvement, self-determination, freedom, and independence, encapsulating the dual essence of his production and aesthetics.
